The A to Z Insights From 2019 General Elections Result Data

The 2019 General Elections results are out. Earlier we gave you a few superb insights from the phase-1 election data to know your candidates better. This time its the real-time analysis of the 2019 general elections result data.

While the whole country was busy celebrating the power of democracy, our Sr. Manager of Data Science, Anand Madhav, was working on to find some really cool insights for you from the 17th Loksabha Election data.

26 Insights we got from the 2019 General Elections Result Data

A	Arunachal Pradesh West parliamentary constituency had the largest share of the postal ballot (4%). However, on an average, 0.4% of votes were cast through postal ballots across all seats in India.
B	Bihar tops the chart in the share of NOTA votes with over 2% of total votes. Nagaland with 0.2% had the least share of NOTA votes across all states
C	Chandrakant Raghunath Patil, BJP candidate from Navsari parliamentary constituency in Gujarat won the election with the largest margin of 6,89,668 (52.73%) votes. He got a whopping 74.37% of total votes
D	BJP candidate, Darshana Jardosh, from Surat parliamentary constituency in Gujarat, received the highest vote share (74.47%) across all the constituencies in India.
E	BJP witnessed a 45% (37 in 2014 to 54 in 2019) increase in seats across Eastern states (Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Odisha). Most notably, BJP moved from 1 to 8 seats in Odisha and from 2 to 18 seats in West Bengal.
F	The 17th Lok Sabha has been strongest ever in terms of Female members. India elected 78 (14.4%) women M.P. to Lok Sabha. Odisha (33%) and West Bengal (26%) sent the maximum percentage of female members to Lok Sabha.
G	Gopalganj parliamentary constituency in Bihar had the largest share of NOTA votes (5.04%). Nationally, each constituency has ~1.1% of NOTA votes. Bidar in Karnataka had the least share of NOTA votes (0.17%).
H	Himachal Pradesh witnessed the highest vote share for any party across states. BJP received 69.1% of total votes in Himachal Pradesh.

I	Only 4 Independent candidate won in 2019 (vs 3 in 2014). Among Independents, Sumalatha Ambareesh won with the highest margin (1,25,876) by defeating Nikhil Kumaraswamy of JD(S) in Mandya (Karnataka)
J	Jammu & Kashmir National Conference candidate, Mohammad Akbar Lone, from Baramulla (J&K) received the lowest vote share among the winning candidates (29.29%).
K	Kerala is the only state where Indian National Congress has managed to score double-digit count of seats. INC got 15 seats in Kerala which is 88% higher than the last count of 8. It got 8 seats each in Punjab and Tamilnadu.
L	BJP’s candidate, Abdul Khader Haji, from Lakshadweep, received the lowest number of votes by any candidate from a recognized political party. He received a total of 125 votes (0.27%).
M	Uttar Pradesh’s Machhali Shahar parliamentary constituency saw the closest fight in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. BJP’s B.P Saroj defeated BSP’s Tribhuvan Ram by 181 votes (0.02%).
N	Nizamabad parliamentary constituency in Telangana had most (185) candidates contesting the election. Out of 185, 175 candidates in the constituency received fewer votes than NOTA (0.19%). Tura parliamentary constituency in Meghalaya had the least number of candidate (3) contesting the election.
O	The opposition is at its weakest since 1989. The last time a single party carried such a huge mandate was in 1984 when Rajiv Gandhi led INC to win 414 Lok Sabha seats after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
P	Phulpur parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh is best known for being India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s constituency. It is currently held by Keshari Devi Patel of the BJP. Including the 2019 general elections result data, the INC party has not been able to win this seat since 1989.
Q	Queen Ojha has won Guwahati parliamentary constituency for BJP. Earlier she was the Mayor of Guwahati. With a net worth of over 62 Crores, she is one of the richest female MPs in the 17th Lok Sabha.
R	Ramesh Kumar Sharma, an Independent candidate, from Pataliputra was the Richest candidate (1,107 Crores) in 2019 General Elections. Ironically, his 2018-19 income tax return showed a salary income of 5.8lakhs. The bulk of his asset (1,072 Crore) consists of agriculture land (36.9 acres) in Navi Mumbai. Ultimately, he lost his deposit after getting only 1,558 votes.
S	Among the parties, which fielded 10 or more candidates in the election, DMK had the best strike rate (100%). DMK won 23/23 seats. AamAadmi Party (1/35) and Bahujan Samaj Party (10/382) had the worst strike rate.
T	Tamilandu, much in line with recent trend kept swinging between DMK and AIDMK. AIMDK from its tally of 37 victories in 2014 dropped to 1 seat in 2019. DMK, on the other hand, moved from 0 seats in 2014 to an impressive 23 seats in 2019. DMK is the third largest party in the 17th Lok Sabha.
U	BJP got best 2019 general election results from Urban seats. It won 35/45 (78%) seats in the Urban areas while it won 70% of Rural Seats (198/238) and 65% of Semi Urban seats (70/108).
V	BJP received 37.4% vote share in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Congress received roughly half the vote share of BJP (19.5%). BJP’s vote share increased by 6% from 2014 elections, while congress’ vote share remained constant.
W	Top 10 seats with Highest Winning Margin, according to 2019 general election results data, goes to BJP.  – Navsari (Gujarat) – 689668,  – Karnal (Haryana) – 656142,  – Faridabad (Haryana) – 638239,  – Bhilwara (Rajasthan) – 612000,  – Vadodara (Gujarat) – 589177,  – West Delhi (NCT OF Delhi) – 578486,  – Chittorgarh (Rajasthan) – 576247,  – Gandhinagar (Gujarat) – 557014,  – North West Delhi (NCT of Delhi) – 553897,  – Hoshangabad (Madhya Pradesh) – 553682.

X	None of the above (NOTA) has been the X-Factor this election. In 26 constituencies, the vote difference between the winner and runner up was less than NOTA votes cast. Congress lost 6 such seats while BJP and YSRCP lost 5 and 3 such seats respectively.
Y	Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) made an impressive comeback in 2019 election. It improved its tally from 9 seats in 2014 to 22 seats in 2019. It also swept assembly elections in the state winning 151/175 assembly seats.
Z	While analyzing the 2019 general elections result data, we found out that surprisingly, Indian National Congress (INC) has Zero MPs across 18 states/UT in India.
