It was the afternoon of 28th September 2018, and the venue was full of data geeks from across the nation. And then they announced it, loud and clear. Gramener bagged the Data Science for Social Good Award at Cypher 2018 – One of India’s largest analytics summit. We received the award for developing an application named ‘Salmon Detection Web App’. The app is trained with deep learning models developed at Gramener AI Labs.
Well, it’s an AI-driven app that can automatically detect the underwater fish species. As fish passes by the installed infrared camera, the app automates the process of video feed inputs, detection, and classification. Also, it simplifies the continued manual efforts of the nature conservation organizations doing similar tasks.
Ultimately, it verifies the population of fish species and helps save it. The deep learning algorithm was developed partnering with ‘Microsoft AI for Earth’ team for Nisqually River Foundation. The detailed case study of it is published by Microsoft. Also, watch the real-time video of the app detecting the fish species.
Lastly, it’s a small contribution from Gramener towards the AI for Good initiative to save biodiversity.
Gramener’s Giri Ganesh participated in a panel discussion on “Building Capacity and Capability for Talent in Data Science” while Nolan Cardozo received the award on behalf of Gramener.
In the end, Giri was asked if he could go back in time and change the tag for a data scientist job role, what it would be.
However, he wittily replied, “90% of the work an actual data scientist does is cleaning the data. The name ‘Data Janitor’ seems quite suitable enough.”
We develop sustainable AI solutions at Gramener AI Labs. We stay abreast with the latest AI technology and offer AI and Machine Learning Consulting to businesses and enterprises to solve complex data problems.
