How can leaders tap into the power of automation while also taking care of their employees?
Table of Contents
People fear AI and are worried that AI-led automation can lead to mass unemployment. Though technology innovation automates away entire functions, it often creates new industries and roles. However, it is not easy for people to pick up these new skillsets to tap into the opportunities created.
Certainly, not all tasks can be automated. Many jobs have tasks that call for “deeply human skills” – those that require compassion, critical thinking, and moral courage. These are the tasks that humans will continue to play in an AI-driven world. For example, Best Buy tapped into these human skills by rolling out an in-home adviser program.
This established a strong customer connect, improved their customer service, and was one of the key factors that helped Best Buy survive the onslaught of Amazon. It is possible for organizations to embrace AI while capitalizing on their team’s “deeply human skills”.
Here are four ways organizations can adapt and scale AI responsibly:
Understand how AI can augment business and improve operations. Augmented intelligence can help people do their jobs better and enable the creation of new, innovative business offerings.
Today, companies are adopting a renewed focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects while running their businesses. Similarly, upskilling and planning for the redeployment of employees displaced by AI should be an important consideration for responsible leaders.
Historically, worker unions have played a crucial role in cushioning the negative impacts of automation. While planning AI-driven automation, organizations must actively listen to their teams and avoid stifling employee activism. This could lead to not just goodwill but direct business as well.
Industry regulation and policies can pave the way to responsible organizational practices. The AI space is overdue for regulations, and this is an area where leaders must get proactively involved through participatory regulations.
